PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING PRIVACY POLICY BEFORE USING THIS WEBSITE.
The Highland Innovation Centre (HIC) is firmly committed to protecting the privacy of individuals who visit our website. In providing this Privacy Policy, we aim to answer the following questions:
- What information do we gather?
- What do we use this information for?
- Who do we share this information with?
- How do you change this information?
Please note that as this Privacy Policy may change at any time, it is important that you check the date at the end of this document on each visit to this website. If this date has changed you should re-read this document in full.
>> What information do we gather?
We normally only gather personally identifiable information, such as your:
- full name (e.g. Miss Karol A.E. Smith);
- job title (e.g. Junior Technician or Managing Director);
- company or organisation name (e.g. Highland Innovation Centre);
- company or organisation website address (e.g. www.highland-innovation.com);
- direct work telephone number,
when you knowingly supply us with it. Examples of when this can occur include when you email us with your feedback or a general enquiry. We may also gather personally identifiable information either from yourself -- such as over the phone or in person -- or from your organisation. We maintain your personally identifiable information in our customer database.
Like the vast majority of e-businesses, HIC uses software to automatically gather certain types of anonymous information. Examples include the:
- URL of your Internet Service Provider (e.g. http://www.aol.com);
- name of your operating system (e.g. Microsoft Windows 98);
- name of your browser (e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5);
- URL of the last webpage you visited before arriving at our website (e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk);
- URL of each HIC webpage you visit.
Each time you request one of our webpages your Internet browser sends all of this anonymous information to the server hosting our website. The software we use simply logs these details as they arrive. The software we use cannot, for example, read emails stored on your hard drive (Note, URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator).
>> What do we use this information for?
We use personally identifiable information, such as your:
- full name, to help safeguard your database entries from unauthorised access;
- job title, to gain a better understanding of what your needs are;
- organisation website address, to learn about your employer;
- email address and direct work telephone number, to contact you.
We use anonymous Information in aggregate form, such as:
- ISP statistics, to help us determine which countries our visitors reside in;
- browser type statistics, to help us improve the design of our website;
- "previous webpage" statistics, to help us advertise more effectively;
- webpage usage statistics, to help us determine content popularity.
Although we mainly use anonymous information in aggregate form (e.g. 81 percent of visitors access the News section of this website), there are times when we may also use this information in a non-aggregate or "raw" form. Please note, however, that we do not attempt to link this data with that stored in our customer database. One reason for examining non-aggregate data is to enable us to identify certain types of usability problems (Note, ISP stands for Internet Service Provider).
>> Who do we share this information with?
Within HIC access to personally identifiable information is restricted to employees involved in customer relationship management.
HIC will only share your personally identifiable information with a third party when:
- the third party is acting on our behalf (e.g. a market research company);
- you have granted us permission (e.g. by email or over the phone);
- we believe you have broken our Terms of Use (e.g. violated our copyright guidelines);
- we are required by law (e.g. court order);
- we believe it will help to protect the safety, rights or property of any person.
HIC shares anonymous information -- aggregate and otherwise -- with third parties under all of the above conditions. As aggregate data cannot be linked to a persons name, we do not restrict its availability to third parties.
>> How do you change this information?
Visitors to our website can do the following to their personally identifiable information:
- change one or more entries in their record (e.g. job title);
- add one or more entries to their record (e.g. organisation website address);
- remove one or more entries from their record (e.g. direct work telephone number);
- remove their entire record.
To make any of the above changes, send an email to privacy@highland-innovation.com clearly stating your request (e.g. Please remove my direct work telephone number). You do not need to provide a reason for your request. If we are in any doubt about the authenticity of an email request, we will seek further confirmation.
Last Changed: 9 November 2001.
