>> SMART: Scotland Awards 1
The Highland Innovation Centre was awarded the SMART grant in December 1999 to assist in the development of the AngioTracker "anti-cancer" drug evaluation instrument.
HIC obtained the maximum financial assistance from the SMART scheme and completed the first stage of the project on time and on budget in July 2001.
As a result of the research and development work on the AngioTracker, a spin-off product with enormous commercial potential was created.
The BreastChecker is a relatively inexpensive consumer product that is intended to offer woman off all ages a convenient and straightforward method of checking their breasts for the presence of suspicious lumps.
Facts and figures about this grant include:
- The purpose of the SMART grant is to help fund the research and development of innovative products and processes;
- To obtain this grant, applicants must win a national competition which is judged by a panel of scientists and business experts;
- The SMART grant assistance programme is only offered to businesses which have an annual turnover of less than £4.9 million, and which employ less than 50 staff;
- 75% of the total project costs up to a maximum of £45,000 is made available to successful applicants.

>> Small Company Innovation Scheme (SCIS)
The Highland Innovation Centre was awarded the SCIS grant in September 2000 to assist in the development of the PhonoJect ultrasound-based needle-free injection device.
HIC obtained the maximum financial assistance from the SCIS scheme and completed the first stage of the project on time and on budget in July 2001.
As a result of the research and development work on the PhonoJect, an ultrasonic power generator has been developed which has the potential to be marketed as a stand-alone product. It runs at 3 frequencies and can operate in either a pulsed or continuous mode.
Facts and figures about this grant include:
- The purpose of the SCIS grant is to help fund the research and development of innovative products and processes which involve "an element of technical risk";
- These grants are awarded on the basis of the supplied business plan and independent assessments of the potential market size;
- The SCIS grant assistance programme is only offered to businesses which have less than 250 employees;
- 35% of the total project costs up to a maximum of £25,000 is made available to successful applicants
