| >> | A. GENERAL PLUG-IN INSTALLATION TIPS |
| Although most plug-ins are relatively straightforward to install, problems can and do occur. To minimise their occurrence, consider the following points: |
|
| 1. | Only install plug-ins that you think you will use on a regular basis (Few people use more than half a dozen plug-ins with any regularity). |
| 2. | Only install plug-ins that come from the official website of a well-known software vendor (e.g. www.microsoft.com, www.apple.com, www.macromedia.com) or from the cover CD of a well-known magazine. |
| 3. | Before installing a plug-in make sure your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements. That is, for example, its processor is sufficiently fast and it has enough free hard-disk space. |
| 4. | Before installing a plug-in make sure your computer meets the minimum software requirements. That is, for example, you are using a compatible operating system and web browser. |
| 5. | Before installing a plug-in you should close all programs (e.g. Microsoft Word, Corel Draw) apart from your web browser. This measure helps to prevent other programs from interfering with the installation process. |
| 6. | For those of you connecting to the Internet from home, or using a slow modem, try to avoid installing a plug-in during peek Internet usage times. Apart from the increased download time, you run a greater chance of "loosing" your connection. |
| 7. | For those of you connecting to the Internet from work, it is always advisable to check with the person responsible for maintaining your computer before installing a plug-in -- many companies now operate strict download policies. |
| 8. | Always try to avoid cancelling the installation process once it has started. Although fully-installed plug-ins are easy to remove, the same cannot always be said of their partially-installed counterparts. Therefore, leave yourself plenty of time. |
| 9. | Although more time consuming, you may wish to install the latest version of your browser. In addition to enhanced security and performance, many new browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer 6) also come with the latest Flash Player "built in". |
| >> | B. SELECTING THE CORRECT MACROMEDIA FLASH PLAYER |
| Nearly every combination of operating system and web browser requires a different Macromedia Flash Player. If you are not using both Microsoft Windows 95 or later and Internet Explorer 3 or later then follow these steps to select the correct plug-in: |
|
| 1. | The first thing you must do is establish the name and version of your browser (e.g. Netscape Navigator 4) and operating system (e.g. MacOS 9). |
| 2. | Once you have this information click the "get Macromedia Flash Player" button near the top of this webpage; the "Macromedia Flash Player Download Centre" webpage will appear. |
| 3. | Instead of clicking the "install now" button on the "Macromedia Flash Player Download Centre" webpage, click the "Need a Different Player?" link several lines below it. |
| 4. | Clicking the "Need a Different Player?" link takes you to a webpage that contains all the different plug-ins made by Macromedia. |
| 5. | Click one of the operating system links (e.g. Macintosh). Then simply locate the Flash Player row and click the download button corresponding to your browser (e.g. Netscape). A webpage with an "install now" button on it will appear. |
| 6. | Once you have clicked the "install now" button, a dialog box may appear asking you to confirm your request to download this plug-in. Click "yes" to confirm your request. |
| 7. | Once installed, a dialog box may appear asking you to restart your computer. Click "no", disconnect from the Internet, close your web browser, and then restart your computer. |
| 8. | You are now ready to start using the Highland Innovation Centre website. Please note that at no time during this installation process do you need to provide the Macromedia website with personal information. |
